Fiji is grappling with a dual crisis of a severe litter problem and an alarming spike in dengue fever cases, leading to calls for urgent governmental action. Opposition member Parveen Bala has voiced concerns regarding the government’s perceived ineffectiveness in addressing these interconnected issues, highlighting a troubling link between poor sanitation practices and a rise in dengue-related fatalities. Currently, the country has recorded eight deaths attributed to dengue fever.
Bala stressed the dire state of hygiene in the country, pointing out that inadequate garbage collection and maintenance have resulted in widespread littering. “The problem is evident; rubbish piles can be seen in every town, and there is no regular maintenance of public spaces,” he stated. He urged the Ministry of Health to collaborate with local councils to devise a comprehensive response strategy that prioritizes sanitation and dengue awareness.
In response to the growing crisis, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called for a united effort from various government ministries to combat both dengue fever and the litter situation. Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, confirmed that discussions are underway with key officials, including the Health Minister and Local Government Minister, to create a coordinated approach.
Rabuka emphasized the need for community engagement, suggesting that a nationwide program involving local councils and village committees could effectively address the hygiene and health crises. He remarked, “This requires a whole-of-country approach, and I hope the Health Minister and the Minister for Local Government can lead this initiative.”
The rising dengue fever cases come on the heels of heavy rains that have created ideal mosquito breeding conditions. Public health officials warn that swift action is essential to avoid further fatalities. Initiatives similar to those in other regions, like house-to-house education programs and community clean-up campaigns, have shown promise in previous outbreaks, indicating that with concerted efforts, the situation can improve significantly.
