In a harrowing series of domestic violence incidents in Fiji, two women and a man have lost their lives, while another woman remains hospitalized with severe injuries. The incidents occurred over the weekend, prompting police to investigate three reports related to domestic disturbances.

The first tragic event unfolded at the Lagilagi Housing complex where a couple was found dead in what authorities believe to be a murder-suicide case. Upon responding to reports of an argument, police discovered the victims with visible wounds and motionless in their flat. The area has since been cordoned off for investigation.

In a second incident, a woman in her twenties sustained serious injuries after being allegedly stabbed by her partner, a man in his forties, at their home on Kerebula Road in Nadi. Tragically, the injuries led to her death, and the suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

The third case involved a woman found outside an apartment complex in Suva with visible injuries, again reportedly inflicted by her partner. She was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where she is receiving medical treatment, as police continue to search for her alleged assailant.

The rising tide of domestic violence is alarming, echoing a broader crisis in Fiji. Reports indicate that nearly two-thirds of women in the nation experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetimes. The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has condemned these recent events, emphasizing that violence should never be regarded as a solution to disputes.

In light of this ongoing crisis, the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, launched in June 2023, is seen as a positive step forward. The government urges individuals, families, and communities to come together to create safe environments, underscoring that every member of society has a role to play in combating domestic violence and protecting vulnerable individuals.

The Ministry has reiterated the availability of support services, including the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and the National Domestic Violence Helpline, assuring victims that they are not alone in their struggles and emphasizing the message that no woman should live in fear.

This unfortunate series of events highlights the critical need for ongoing dialogue and action around domestic violence prevention in Fiji, fostering hope for a future where all individuals can feel safe in their homes.
