The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) is making significant strides to enhance border security by establishing a new canine facility in the Northern Division. This initiative aims to extend the agency’s reach beyond traditional entry points, ensuring a more effective response to the rising threat of illicit and smuggled goods, especially following recent major drug seizures in the country.
FRCS Chief Executive Officer Udit Singh emphasized the need for a collaborative approach among various government agencies, stating that the expansion of their Dog Detector Unit to Savusavu is a critical step in fortifying maritime border control. “We are building a canine facility up in the North and we are working closely with other government agencies,” Singh explained. This collaboration will involve coordination with the police, water police, Navy, Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and other enforcement bodies.
In addition to the canine facility, FRCS is also working on establishing a container examination facility to enhance non-intrusive inspection capabilities. They are procuring advanced surveillance and monitoring technology to improve risk detection and management at borders.
Singh noted that border security is an ongoing challenge due to the constant movement of goods and people across international borders. He pointed out a newly launched passenger terminal at Nabouwalu in Bua, Vanua Levu, with plans to expand similar facilities in Natovi. “There’s a lot of internal movement, and we will be talking with other agencies to coordinate our efforts,” he added.
He stressed the importance of vigilance, as drugs and contraband frequently enter through various channels, including mail, maritime routes, and personal luggage. Singh also acknowledged the evolving sophistication of criminal elements and the need for enhanced intelligence and collaboration with international agencies.
This proactive stance by the FRCS demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding Fiji’s borders, reflecting a robust strategy to counteract increasingly sophisticated methods employed by traffickers and smugglers. By fostering inter-agency cooperation and investing in technology and resources, Fiji is taking critical steps towards a more secure environment for its citizens.
