Fiji wrapped up its run at the HSBC Cape Town Sevens tournament with an impressive third place finish, triumphing over Spain with a score of 47-10 in the bronze medal playoff. Under the guidance of coach Osea Kolinisau, Fiji fell short of reaching the gold medal final after a narrowly contested match against France that ended 19-17.
Determined to secure a strong finish, Fiji showcased their skill and strategy by scoring on almost every opportunity while effectively exploiting mistakes made by the Spanish side. The Fijian team demonstrated their depth with seven players each contributing a try, including Joji Nasova, Filipe Sauturaga, Jeremaia Matana, George Bose, Terio Veilawa, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Vuiviwa Naduvalo.
In addition to their tries, Nasova and Teba converted one each, while Sauturaga and Veilawa both completed two conversions, solidifying Fiji’s commanding performance. Spain’s efforts were limited to two tries in the first half, both scored by Jeremy Trevithick.
This victory not only highlights Fiji’s resilience and skill but also sets a positive tone for future tournaments, proving that they have the potential to compete at the highest levels. The impressive bronze medal finish serves as motivation for the squad as they continue to develop and prepare for upcoming challenges.
