The judgement regarding former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohamed Saneem has been postponed. During a hearing today, Chief Justice Salesi Temo indicated that he requires additional time to reach a decision, and the ruling is still pending.

Sayed-Khaiyum faces allegations of abuse of office, while Saneem is charged with receiving a corrupt benefit. The accusations assert that while Sayed-Khaiyum served as Prime Minister and Chair of the Constitutional Offices Commission in 2022, he executed a second Deed of Variation and Addendum. This document allegedly allowed for the payment or waiving of additional taxes owed by Saneem as part of the back pay process from an earlier Deed of Variation dated June 30, 2022, without proper authorization from the President or the Commission.

Furthermore, it’s claimed that Saneem sought and received a personal benefit, specifically the approval and payment of deductible tax relief amounting to $55,944.03 on his back pay, facilitated by Sayed-Khaiyum.

The Chief Justice is expected to deliver the judgement on March 30, which will be awaited with considerable interest as it could have significant implications for both individuals involved.
