Fiji's Father's Day: Honoring Legacy and Strengthening Family Bonds

Fiji Celebrates Fathers and Community Strength on Harvest Sunday

METHODIST churches across Fiji marked Father’s Day yesterday, an annual celebration on the second Sunday of March devoted to honoring both living and deceased fathers. This year, the occasion coincided with Harvest Sunday, a significant moment for expressing gratitude, as emphasized by Reverend Dr. Jolami Lasawa, the general secretary of the Methodist Church in Fiji.

Reverend Dr. Lasawa articulated the day’s importance, stating, “It is a special Sunday where we celebrate fathers — those who have passed, those who are with us today, and the fathers of the future.” Traditionally, the congregation brings the year’s harvest to the church as an offering, reinforcing a deep spirit of gratitude within the community.

This year’s celebration also marked the 190th anniversary of the Methodist Church’s inception in Fiji, which dates back to 1835. Dr. Lasawa reaffirmed the crucial role fathers play in both families and society. Prayers and thanksgiving were dedicated to honor their contributions, with fathers leading church services throughout the day, highlighting their significance in religious and familial structures.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was present at the Nasareci Methodist Church in Nadi, where he underscored the vital role of parents in guiding their children. “As parents, we must set the right example for our children,” he stated, emphasizing the need to provide support during challenging times. Rabuka’s address reflected broader concerns surrounding social issues in Fiji, including crime and drug abuse, which he noted often stem from home environments.

His calls align with a growing emphasis on enhancing parental involvement amid rising societal challenges. Government officials have echoed similar messages, advocating for parents to actively engage in their children’s lives, promote good values, and establish strong familial connections to protect children from negative influences.

This meaningful celebration not only recognized fathers but also served as a reminder of the community’s shared responsibility in nurturing future generations. With a united approach towards reinforcing family values and relationships, there is hope for a resilient society where children can thrive, free from the dangers of crime and substance abuse.
