Tropical Cyclone Rae has exited Fiji waters, but the impact of its remnants is still being felt across the Southern Lau Group, where strong to gale-force winds persist. The Fiji Meteorological Office has issued a gale warning for regions including Vatoa, Ono-i-Lau, Moce, Komo, Namuka-i-Lau, Kabara, Fulaga, and Ogea, indicating that residents should remain vigilant. Additionally, a strong wind warning alerts those in Yasawa, the Northern and Central Lau Group, Kadavu, and other nearby islands.
While the strong wind warning previously in effect for northeastern parts of Viti Levu, Mamanuca, and eastern parts of Vanua Levu has been lifted, the situation remains serious due to ongoing heavy rainfall affecting the entire Fiji group. A flash flood warning has been activated for small streams and low-lying flood-prone areas, urging communities to exercise caution.
Further complicating matters, Tropical Depression 10F is developing just east of Vanuatu and is expected to strengthen into a Category 1 tropical cyclone. Though it is forecasted to remain far west of Fiji while tracking southeast, it still poses a risk of intensified weather in the region.
Communities are encouraged to prepare for these ongoing weather challenges. As history has shown, collective efforts and preparedness can significantly reduce the impact of such storms. Local leaders continue to stress the importance of staying informed, securing properties, and being ready with emergency supplies as more rain and winds are expected.
The resilient spirit of the Fijian people, characterized by solidarity and cooperation, remains a beacon of hope in navigating through these adversities. By embracing their history of working together during challenging weather events, residents can find strength and unity to face any upcoming threats posed by tropical weather systems.
