Tropical Cyclone Rae has exited Fiji’s waters, but its effects linger, particularly with strong to gale-force winds still impacting the Southern Lau group. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a gale warning for Vatoa, Ono-I-Lau, Moce, Komo, Namuka-I-Lau, Kabara, Fulaga, and Ogea. Additionally, a strong wind warning persists for the Yasawa, Northern and Central Lau group, Kadavu, and surrounding smaller islands. Fortunately, the previous strong wind warning for northeastern parts of Viti Levu has been lifted.
A persistent heavy rain warning remains in effect for the entirety of the Fiji Group, along with a flash flood warning applicable to all small streams and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Residents are advised to exercise caution and prepare for possible flooding as conditions may lead to flash floods in vulnerable regions.
Historically, Fijians have demonstrated resilience and unity in facing natural disasters. Local leaders stress the importance of community preparedness, encouraging individuals to secure their homes and stay informed through local channels, reflecting on past experiences that highlight the benefits of collective action during crises. As the community rallies together, there is hope that these efforts will enhance solidarity and cooperation among residents while tackling the challenges posed by the cyclone.
In navigating this difficult situation, Fijians are reminded of the strength that comes from mutual support and are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their health and safety during this weather event.
