Fiji’s Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sitiveni Rabuka, affirmed the nation’s unwavering support for the State of Israel, even in light of the arrest warrant issued against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes. Speaking with FijiLive, Rabuka emphasized that the warrant pertains to an individual, not the state itself.
“We will continue to acknowledge our international responsibility towards Israel as a member of the United Nations,” Rabuka stated, clarifying that the legal action is a personal matter involving the Israeli PM rather than an affront to the country as a whole. He also referred to an invitation extended to Netanyahu for a visit to Fiji during their meeting in September 2023, but refrained from commenting on whether that invitation still stands.
Notably, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued warrants for Netanyahu and others, including former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, following accusations related to war crimes amid ongoing conflicts. The court cited sufficient grounds to believe that Netanyahu is responsible for war crimes such as “starvation as a method of warfare.” This situation is significant as it represents the first time an Israeli leader faces international legal proceedings for alleged actions taken against Palestinians during the longstanding conflict.
While the ICC warrants do not necessarily compel arrests, they could limit Netanyahu’s travel to jurisdictions governed by the court. In response, Netanyahu’s office dismissed the allegations as “absurd and anti-Semitic,” insisting that Israel will not succumb to external pressures and remains resolute in its military objectives following the recent attacks from Hamas.
In summary, Fiji’s support for Israel’s statehood stands firm, focusing on the distinction between an individual leader’s legal challenges and the nation’s sovereignty. As the international community grapples with complex geopolitical tensions, Fiji’s stance reflects its commitment to its diplomatic relations and responsibilities, fostering a dialogue amid challenges. Hope remains for resolution and peace in the region, reflecting a collective desire for stability and understanding.
