Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, recently highlighted the increasing diplomatic engagement with India, noting that over 21 cabinet ministers and three deputy prime ministers from Fiji have made visits to India in the past year. Speaking at the International Day for Yoga celebration in Suva, Prasad remarked that such high-level interactions reflect a robust political commitment from both nations to strengthen bilateral relations across critical sectors.
Prasad emphasized that Fiji’s partnership with India is thriving, addressing crucial areas such as healthcare, agriculture, information technology, renewable energy, and capacity building. A significant point of pride is the ongoing construction of a 100-bed super-specialty hospital in Suva, a landmark project initiated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) III Summit in 2023. Once completed, this facility is expected to considerably improve healthcare access for Fijians and the broader Pacific region.
The Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, echoed the sentiment of a strong bond between the two nations, expressing hope for deeper cooperation in sectors such as health, wellness, and cultural exchange.
These developments reflect a growing optimism around the partnership between Fiji and India, as both countries continue to work together on initiatives that promise to enhance the quality of life for their citizens and foster sustainable growth in the region. The ongoing commitment to collaboration paints a hopeful picture for the future, signaling a path towards greater mutual benefits and shared development goals.
