A family of 15 has endured a devastating loss following a fire that completely ravaged their home on Akuila Bale Street, Howell Road in Suva at around 9 a.m. The blaze reportedly began at the lower part of the house while homeowner Elenoa Domoni, 31, was away at work. A neighbor alerted Domoni after spotting flames erupting from her residence.
Inside the house at the time were Domoni’s father, who is partially blind, her three children, a cousin, and two nieces. Thankfully, a quick-thinking neighbor entered the burning structure and managed to rescue her father, who was unaware of the emergency.
The family suspects that a mosquito coil may have sparked the fire, although the official cause is currently under investigation. Domoni expressed the family’s heartache, saying, “We basically lost everything. All of our utensils, refrigerator, and washing machines. We have three beds, a cupboard, and a fence. The only clothes that is left is the one that is on our back right now.” The estimated total loss, including their home and belongings, amounts to around $40,000.
Since relocating from Wailea Settlement in 2001, Domoni and her husband have been the only working members of their household, which makes their situation even more difficult. Domoni shared her uncertainty about their next steps, stating, “I haven’t, we still I think I was talking with my husband and we don’t know where to go to right now.”
This incident is part of a troubling trend of fire incidents in the area, similar to a recent case in Ba where another family lost their home. In light of these tragedies, community members have rallied to offer support, reflecting resilience and compassion in challenging times.
Authorities are investigating the causes of these fires, and local outreach initiatives are being organized to assist affected families. The strong sense of community support highlights the importance of coming together during crises, showcasing how people can uplift one another in moments of adversity.
