Safety First: Evacuation Centres Open Amid Flooding Concerns

Evacuation Centres Activated as Weather Crisis Unfolds

Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Disaster Management, has announced that evacuation centres will be activated as needed in response to ongoing adverse weather conditions. Several centres are currently operational, providing shelter for residents who are concerned about the safety of their homes. While the exact number of activated centres was not disclosed, the move follows inquiries from residents in flood-prone areas around Labasa seeking safe refuge.

Mr. Ditoka recommends that individuals uncertain about their homes’ structural integrity should seek shelter in evacuation centres during daylight hours to ensure their safety. The government is also preparing to distribute food rations starting tomorrow to those residing in existing evacuation centres within the Western Division. Currently, four centres—Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office—are assisting 61 households, amounting to a total of 234 individuals. This response has been bolstered by generous donations from various organizations, including cooked meals and hygiene kits, showcasing the community’s solidarity during this crisis.

To ensure public safety, advisories have been issued urging citizens to remain vigilant as a Flood Warning is in effect for several vulnerable regions. The police are prepared to assist with evacuations if necessary, and residents are strongly encouraged to evacuate when directed, ideally during daylight hours.

These actions underscore not only the effective measures being implemented to protect lives but also the cooperative spirit between government and community agencies, which enhances the resilience of those affected during these challenging times. With continuous support and preparation, the local response reflects a hopeful outlook for recovery and safety in the face of adversity.
