Tensions in the Middle East have escalated significantly, raising alarms about a potential conflict if diplomatic solutions are not reached. A Fijian security advisor employed by an oil company in the region shared insights on his experience after swiftly returning home amid increasing hostilities. Speaking anonymously, he revealed that he had evacuated just before the Israeli government announced threats of airstrikes against Iran.

“I’ve been living and working in the Middle East and we’ve been closely monitoring the situation as it directly impacts our operations,” the advisor stated. He pointed out that the ongoing strife between Israel, the U.S., and Iran has intensified following an attack last July, suggesting that current actions were months in the making after failed negotiations.

Following the deterioration of talks, the advisor’s company prioritized employee safety, prompting immediate evacuation measures. “Our main priority is safety,” he emphasized, reflecting the gravity of the circumstances.

In light of the unfolding events, Fiji’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sakiasi Ditoka reassured Fijians in the Middle East and their families at home. He urged individuals to remain calm, adhere to official guidance from local governments, and maintain communication with family members. Additionally, he encouraged those not yet registered with Fiji’s diplomatic missions to do so.

Minister Ditoka reiterated Fiji’s stance, calling for restraint and advocating for dialogue as well as peaceful resolutions to disputes consistent with international law. As the global community watches closely, there remains hope that concerted diplomatic efforts can avert further escalation and foster stability in the region.
