Empowering Women: Fiji’s Path to Economic Growth and Equality

Fiji is witnessing a concerted effort to promote gender equality and empower women economically, as articulated by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, during the recent International Women’s Day celebration at the Reserve Bank of Fiji. Kiran emphasized that the economic empowerment of women has far-reaching benefits, enhancing the welfare of families, businesses, and the nation.

This year’s event underscored the consistent theme of “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment,” highlighting women’s essential roles in the business sector. Kiran shared insights on how women’s economic participation is critical for increasing Fiji’s GDP and fostering industrial growth. She stated, “Gender equality is not only a moral obligation but also an economic necessity,” reflecting the need for inclusive policies that support women entrepreneurs.

To further bolster this initiative, the Fijian government is implementing policies aimed at improving financial literacy among women and enhancing the support for women-owned businesses. Kiran also called for more women in leadership roles and mentorship programs to equip young women entering the workforce.

Nitin Gandhi, Chairperson of the South Pacific Stock Exchange, echoed these sentiments by advocating for partnerships focused on training and mentorship to foster future female leaders. He highlighted that achieving gender equality is a shared responsibility requiring the involvement of men and allies.

Patricia Naisara, Head of Human Resources at Westpac Banking Corporation Fiji, elaborated on the company’s initiatives—such as the “Women of Westpac” advocacy group—which aim to provide mentorship and leadership opportunities for women. Naisara noted that women currently comprise 60% of their workforce, underscoring their representation in leadership positions.

However, both Kiran and Naisara acknowledged the significant underrepresentation of women in decision-making roles, with women holding only 21% of board seats in Fiji. Their remarks underline the pressing need for reforms that dismantle barriers and create equitable opportunities for women in leadership.

This ongoing focus on gender equality not only reflects a commitment to social progress but also holds the promise of enhanced productivity and economic stability for Fiji. As the country fosters an environment conducive to women’s empowerment, there is hope that continuous efforts will result in substantial progress toward leadership and economic opportunities for women, benefiting society at large.
