More than 100 individuals convened at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva earlier today in support of the global women’s strike, advocating for the acknowledgment of women’s human rights. The event, named “If Women Stop, the World Stops,” fostered an empowering atmosphere where women of various backgrounds came together for sharing, advocacy, and relaxation.
Organized by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, the gathering aimed to highlight the invaluable contributions of women’s unpaid labor. Communication Manager Serelisoni Moceica articulated that this platform encourages participants to voice their opinions and concerns, emphasizing the importance of taking a break from their routine responsibilities.
Moceica further noted the ongoing initiatives to bridge gaps in gender equality and refine policymaking processes within the community, underscoring the relevance of such gatherings in promoting women’s rights. The participation of respected figures like Laisa Vulakoro, a prominent singer and the first woman appointed as chairperson of the Fiji Performing Rights Association, inspired attendees. Vulakoro’s presence served as a reminder of the ongoing struggle women face, encouraging them to overcome barriers and pursue their goals.
