Empowered Women Rise: A New Era of Entrepreneurship in Bua

The recent International Women’s Expo was a significant milestone for the women of Bua, as they participated for the first time. Representing the Navakasiga Women’s Group, President Ateca Vuki expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to network and explore new market spaces to grow their business ventures.

Vuki highlighted that while the women of Bua had attended the expo in Savusavu the previous year, this year’s experience was different, bringing fresh insights into the advancements made by women entrepreneurs across the nation. She remarked, “I am grateful for this opportunity, as I got to see the improvements in the types of businesses women across the country are venturing into.” Her experiences at the expo will be shared within her community to inspire others.

Despite the opportunities identified at the expo, Vuki acknowledged that challenges still exist, particularly regarding access to market spaces. She pointed out that getting to the Labasa market from Navakasiga incurs a cost of $20 and is limited by infrequent bus service, which travels only once a day. This poses hardships for women trying to sell their goods, as missing a bus means waiting another day. Vuki illustrated the potential for increased earnings by stating, “If we had easier access to a market, just imagine the earning potential.”

The determination exhibited by Vuki and her group in overcoming these obstacles exemplifies their commitment to nurturing financial support for their families. Their experiences reflect a broader trend among women in rural areas who are increasingly becoming empowered through entrepreneurship, bringing hope for better livelihoods in their communities.

Reflecting on this trend, similar success stories from other regions, like the women of Mavana in Vanuabalavu, highlight how participation in expos can serve as a powerful catalyst for income generation. At the Vanuabalavu Expo, for instance, women showcased handicrafts and earned significant revenue, contributing not only to personal financial growth but also to collective community initiatives like the formation of a women’s club.

Such events not only spotlight the talents and capabilities of these women but also emphasize the importance of support systems and training that can further enhance their entrepreneurial skills. Together, these narratives of empowerment reinforce a positive outlook on the role of women in economic development throughout the region.
