Sacred Heart College is placing significant emphasis on student experiences rather than competition during its inter-house athletic events, held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Principal Praveena Chand emphasized the importance of creating memorable experiences for all students, stating that while winning is important, the primary goal is to allow students to engage in athletic activities in a supportive environment. This approach is especially crucial as many students may not progress to more competitive meets.

Chand articulated that the event serves as a platform for students to embrace the spirit of athletics in Fiji, highlighting that, “Because the majority of the students may not participate in the zones, we are giving them time today to just feel, and get into the spirit of the Fiji Finals.” This initiative not only fosters enjoyment but also cultivates a sense of community among students as they prepare to support their peers in future competitions.

Preparations are underway for the upcoming Suva Zone One meet, scheduled for July 27, where students will be selected based on their performances in the inter-house events. Additionally, the Fiji Finals will take place from August 24 to 26 at the same venue, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talents on a broader stage.

A similar commitment to nurturing student participation is seen at Marist Brothers Primary School, which recently hosted its own inter-house event at HFC Bank Stadium to prepare students for upcoming competitions, including the Suva Zone and Chow Games. This trend of inter-house events is becoming increasingly prevalent as schools collaborate to prepare their students for athletic challenges while building a united sporting community.

This focus on participation over competition not only highlights the spirit of sportsmanship but also contributes to a growing culture of inclusivity in Fiji’s athletic landscape. As young athletes gear up for these events, they are not only improving their physical skills but also acquiring essential life lessons in teamwork and resilience, fostering a promising future in both sports and personal development.
