Lawyer Sainiana Radrodro emphasized the importance of community involvement in child-rearing during a public consultation on the proposed Education Bill held in Lautoka. She stated that it is essential not to let punitive measures, such as corporal punishment, take the place of parental guidance or guardianship.

Radrodro underscored that collaborative efforts from the community are crucial in fostering better disciplinary methods for children. “We cannot allow the rod to become the parent or guardian,” she remarked, stressing the necessity of finding more constructive alternatives for discipline.

Additionally, she praised the Education Ministry for implementing various initiatives, including the establishment of counseling centers that provide support for students who struggle to adhere to school rules. These centers offer guidance and counseling, aiming to help children navigate their challenges effectively.

The lawyer also noted the presence of psychiatrists, counselors, and chaplains within schools, highlighting their critical roles. “This is very important,” she asserted, advocating for a reintroduction of religious teachings into the school curriculum as a way to instill values of discipline, love, and community service among students. Radrodro believes that reinforcing these foundational principles is vital for nurturing a more united and supportive environment for children.

Her insights reflect a growing recognition of the need for systemic changes in educational approaches, fostering a more compassionate and community-oriented framework for child development. This perspective aligns with ongoing efforts in educational reform, aiming to enhance student well-being and discipline through support rather than punishment.
