The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua faced a setback in their season opener against Moana Pasifika, losing 26-40 in a match marred by significant heat stoppages. Head coach Glen Jackson highlighted how the enforced breaks hindered the team’s momentum, as they were subjected to 20-minute interruptions during each half due to extreme weather conditions.

These stoppages were implemented in accordance with the World Rugby Heat and Air Quality Guidelines, which prioritize player safety by assessing environmental conditions. The match held at Churchill Park in Lautoka saw temperatures exceed acceptable levels, necessitating these breaks to maintain both team safety and performance.

Jackson drew a comparison between the frequent interruptions and the style of play in the National Football League (NFL), noting that such stoppages can disrupt the flow of the game. “We didn’t get the start that we were after. It seems like it’s becoming a bit of an NFL game here, with the length of time and stoppages and the team not getting us into momentum,” he said, reflecting on the challenges faced during the match.

Looking ahead, the Drua will aim to bounce back in their upcoming fixture against the New South Wales Waratahs this Friday at 8:35 PM at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, Australia. The team will be eager to regain their rhythm and improve their performance in what promises to be a competitive encounter. With the support of their fans and a stronger strategy, there’s hope for a turnaround in their fortunes.
