A 21-year-old woman from Labasa has been charged with providing false information to police following a reported assault and robbery incident last Saturday. The woman initially claimed she was attacked by two unknown i-Taukei men who robbed her of money, a gold watch, and a mobile phone in a park near Labasa Hospital.

However, police investigations revealed inconsistencies in her account after reviewing CCTV footage. The footage showed her entering a taxi right after getting off a bus at the Labasa bus stand. The taxi driver confirmed that he dropped her off at a residence in Line Point, Batinikama, identified as belonging to her 25-year-old boyfriend.

Upon questioning by authorities, she admitted that she had gone to her boyfriend’s home rather than being assaulted by strangers. She revealed that an altercation had indeed occurred at the residence, where the stolen items were later discovered. Consequently, the situation was reclassified as domestic violence, prompting police intervention on her behalf.

The woman faces charges for giving false information to a public servant, while her boyfriend has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. Both are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in the Labasa Magistrates Court.

This case underscores the critical issue of domestic violence and the necessity for sensitive handling of such matters. It serves as an important reminder for victims to seek assistance through appropriate means and highlights the role of community support in safeguarding those in vulnerable situations. Local authorities are committed to addressing domestic violence with seriousness, ensuring that true victims receive justice and essential support.
