As the disaster season commences this month, fostering a sense of urgency and preparedness within affected communities is essential. During the National Disaster Awareness Week celebrations held in Nakasi, Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural, Maritime Development, and Disaster Management, emphasized the importance of shifting the mindset of Fijians regarding natural disasters.

Mr. Ditoka highlighted that while it is crucial to be prepared, there exists a natural inclination towards complacency among many Fijians. He noted, “We sometimes hold the belief that disasters won’t happen to us, but our goal is to change that perspective.” The message he conveyed is clear: everyone must recognize that they could be impacted and that readiness is vital.

To combat complacency, Mr. Ditoka mentioned the implementation of community-based disaster risk management training. He urged every village to ensure they have an active disaster risk management committee in place. During his visits to various communities, he consistently challenges local leaders about the status of their committees, underscoring that a lack of preparedness can be a significant hurdle in effectively facing disasters.

Furthermore, he reassured that the ministry has been conducting disaster preparedness training throughout the year and has reminded divisional commissioners of their duty to keep the public informed and equipped. Mr. Ditoka affirmed the ministry’s commitment to aggressively promote community-based disaster risk management training moving forward.

Ultimately, he urged the public to take personal responsibility for their safety as the cyclone season approaches, reinforcing that preparedness is a collective effort that involves everyone.

In summary, as Fiji prepares for the disaster season, the government’s ongoing efforts signify a commitment to enhancing community resilience and readiness, truly reflecting the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding lives and property. By fostering a culture of preparedness, communities can build a safer future together.
