This week, the Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) at the Maururu dumpsite in Ba achieved a significant milestone as they received official identification cards from the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), in collaboration with the Ba Town Council. Many of these individuals have been working at the dumpsite for over two decades, and this recognition marks a long-awaited acknowledgment of their essential role in Fiji’s waste management system.

Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, explained that the handover of the ID cards transcends mere identification; it symbolizes the respect and dignity that these hardworking individuals deserve. The cards grant access to the dumpsite and serve as a testament to their contributions to recycling efforts across Fiji. “This is about restoring dignity,” Deo emphasized, voicing gratitude for the support received from the Ministry of Local Government. This initiative makes Ba the second city in Fiji to recognize CPRs officially, following a similar program in Vunato.

The CPRs, who were historically referred to as informal waste pickers, play a crucial role in collecting recyclable materials from various sources, thereby reducing waste in landfills and promoting recycling. Beyond recognition, there is a broader initiative to enhance their working conditions, as seen with the recent opening of a Dignity Facility. This facility provides essential amenities like water, washrooms, and areas for meals and rest, addressing the long-standing challenges faced by these dedicated individuals.

Deo reiterated that despite their vital contributions, CPR workers have been underappreciated and inadequately compensated. He advocates for greater recognition as essential workers, with access to necessary services. The steps taken by PRF aim not only to uplift the CPR community but also to inspire additional support from stakeholders, including health benefits and allowances.

This development is a hopeful step forward for the CPR community, promising improved recognition and opportunities for a dignified work environment. As these efforts gain momentum, there is an optimistic outlook for the acknowledgment and support of those who tirelessly contribute to the sustainability of Fiji’s environment.
