Cyclone Rae: A Community United Against Nature’s Fury

Tropical Cyclone Rae has maintained its status as a Category 2 cyclone, presenting a significant danger to vulnerable communities along its path. According to Misaeli Funaki, the Director of the Fiji Meteorological Service, as of 3 PM today, the cyclone was recorded approximately 75 kilometers south of Cicia Island and 264 kilometers north-northwest of Ono-i-Lau.

Currently, TC Rae is advancing southward at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour, moving through the Lau waters and aimed at Ono-i-Lau. Funaki noted that wind speeds have reached up to 90 kilometers per hour in some areas, with similar observations from Vanuabalavu, underscoring concerns about flooding due to anticipated heavy rainfall.

Residents are advised to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures, as TC Rae is expected to exit Fiji waters in the early hours of tomorrow morning. Storm warnings remain active for multiple islands including Vanua Balavu, Tuvuca, Lakeba, Moce, Cicia, Nayau, and others within the Moala Group. A heavy rain warning is now in effect for all of Fiji, additionally highlighting the significant risk of flooding.

This situation reflects previous experiences with adverse weather events in the region, where community preparedness and solidarity have proven essential. Historical occurrences emphasize the importance of residents securing their properties and forming supportive networks to mitigate the impacts of such storms.

While TC Rae poses challenges, it also serves as an opportunity for the community to come together, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity. With collective action and preparedness, Fijians can navigate this challenging weather situation, reinforcing their commitment to support one another.
