In a significant development for residents of Cuvu in Nadroga, 113 families have received lease offer letters, officially transforming their status from an informal settlement to recognized homeowners. The handover of these documents was conducted by Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo and Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa, marking what they described as the dawn of a new era characterized by security and opportunity for these families.

Minister Vosarogo expressed the importance of this milestone, stating, “For too long, this place has been called the Cuvu Informal Settlement. Today, you are informal no more.” He highlighted that the issuance of lease titles goes beyond mere paperwork; it signifies the delivery of dignity, security, and a future filled with opportunities. This transformation allows families to build permanent homes, access government grants, and establish small businesses, thereby creating a legacy for future generations.

The lease offers represent a significant achievement under the government’s Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme, which aims not only to formalize settlements but also to improve housing accessibility throughout Fiji. The recent developments in Cuvu set a precedent, as the community becomes the first, with others such as Ledrusasa and Waidamudamu expected to follow suit by the end of 2025.

Minister Nalumisa acknowledged the patience and cooperation of the Cuvu community, reflecting on the hard work that led to this moment. He emphasized that the lease agreements, valid for 99 years, empower individuals to invest in their homes and improve living conditions. The community’s long-standing needs have been addressed through comprehensive socio-economic surveys, underscoring the importance of tailoring developments to meet local requirements.

As these families embrace their new status, the government’s commitment to upgrading living conditions in informal settlements across Fiji sparks optimism about sustainable improvements and a brighter future for many. The shift towards secure housing offers these families a pathway to prosperity and a strong foundation for generations to come, reinforcing the potential for positive community change.
