Community Unites After Devastating Fire Leaves Family of 22 Homeless

A fire in Tovata, Makoi, Nasinu, has left a family of 22 homeless after their home was completely destroyed early Monday morning. The owner, Ananaiasa Nodrakoro, stated that the blaze began in the electrical meter box and rapidly engulfed their residence within minutes. “We didn’t even have time to save anything,” Mr. Nodrakoro lamented, expressing gratitude for the safety of his family despite the loss of all their belongings including clothing, essential documents, and food.

Neighbors witnessed the scene unfold, reporting heavy smoke and the family’s urgent cries for help as they escaped to safety. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the emotional impact, especially on the children, has been profound. Many family members are currently staying with friends and relatives while they seek temporary shelter and assistance.

The community has stepped in to support the displaced family, with local charities mobilizing to provide necessary aid. However, the Nodrakoro family urgently needs food, clothing, and basic supplies as they navigate this challenging period. Mr. Nodrakoro emphasized their situation, stating, “We are grateful to be alive, but we don’t know what comes next. We’re just taking it one day at a time.”

The National Fire Authority (NFA) is investigating the cause of the fire. This incident resonates with a series of recent fire tragedies in the area, including another family that lost their home in Suva, which has sparked community responses of compassion and support for those affected.

The resilience demonstrated by community members in rallying to assist the Nodrakoro family reflects a commitment to uplifting one another during difficult times. It’s a reminder of the strength found in unity amidst adversity.
