The future of gold mining at Mount Kasi in Fiji significantly depends on the backing of local landowners, according to Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo. With the government holding the authority to issue a Special Prospecting License (SPL), progress on the project is contingent upon obtaining complete community support. “The minister can decide on the special prospecting license, but we do not want to make decisions without explaining them to the people,” Vosarogo stated, emphasizing the importance of local involvement and understanding.

Previously, the Mt Kasi area has demonstrated considerable economic potential, having employed hundreds of workers during earlier mining activities. If the SPL evolves into a mining lease, it has the potential to create between 400 to 500 jobs, which is particularly vital given the scarcity of job opportunities in the Northern region of Fiji. This could lead to significant positive ripple effects on the local economy.

Echoing Vosarogo’s sentiments, previous discussions indicate that the government’s ultimate goal is to foster better communication and collaboration with the community, especially in light of some local resistance to decisions about mining operations. In earlier consultations, landowners expressed a preference for Australian-based Aquilo Gold as the partner for managing the mine, highlighting their concerns about previously made decisions and the lack of transparency. The minister’s commitment to engaging landowners signals a promising shift towards inclusivity and joint decision-making in resource management that acknowledges local rights and needs.

Overall, the renewed focus on addressing the community’s needs and securing their support can pave the way for a brighter future in mining at Mt Kasi, potentially ushering in economic growth and enhanced relationships between the government and local communities.
