Residents of Ucunivanua Village are increasingly concerned over unusual land and maritime activity that may be linked to narcotics. Community engagement has taken center stage as locals aim to address potential threats to their safety.
Village spokesman Josateki Rokomalani, 46, reported sightings of suspicious visitors and vessels in the area, which has prompted widespread anxiety among residents regarding security issues. Notably, two Asian individuals who purportedly visited the village last year have returned, requesting a boat ride into the ocean. Their claims of being tourists have raised suspicions within the community.
In addition to these visitors, unidentified yachts have been spotted anchoring in the village’s waters, with some appearing alongside a van during nighttime. These developments have led the community to inform the police, indicating a proactive stance toward potential dangers.
Recognizing the seriousness of these events, village leaders have initiated educational campaigns aimed at informing youth about the risks associated with drug use. Discussions are also underway regarding a village bylaw aimed at addressing drug-related activities. This proposed legislation would empower leaders to remove anyone involved in trafficking, selling, or using narcotics, though it will be implemented only after consultation with local leadership.
