The repair work at Pacific Cement Pte Limited (PCL) has been successfully finalized, as confirmed by Fijian Holdings Limited (FHL). Production has resumed, allowing PCL to supply both bulk and bagged cement to its customers, ensuring that market supply has returned to normal levels. This marks a significant recovery for the company following a period of disruption that began with a mill breakdown earlier this year.

Previously, the cement plant faced operational challenges, resulting in a temporary halting of production for two to three months. During that time, FHL had to consider importing cement to mitigate potential shortages across the region. However, proactive measures were taken by both PCL and local competitors like Tengy Cement to maintain a stable supply chain.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has played a vital role in monitoring the cement supply situation during PCL’s operational halt. They assured stakeholders that there would be sufficient supply to meet local demands, even providing oversight to prevent any unfair pricing practices in the market during the transitional phase.

As Fiji’s construction sector gradually shows signs of recovery after a reported 8.9% decline in infrastructure work, the resumption of operations at PCL is a hopeful indication for the industry’s resilience. The collaborative efforts to stabilize the cement supply chain and the positive trends in demand for construction materials reflect a buoyant outlook for future growth.

Overall, the successful completion of repairs and the resumption of production at PCL not only support the local economy but also highlight a community’s commitment to overcoming challenges facing the construction and manufacturing sectors. This renewed operational capability could very well foster ongoing improvements in the construction materials market throughout Fiji.
