Celebrating Resilience: The Inspiring Journey of a Girmitiya Matriarch

BASWATI, a remarkable 94-year-old descended from Girmitiyas, has been honored during the recent launch of the Girmit celebrations in Labasa. Her story embodies the struggles faced by countless mothers during the colonial era, particularly those who toiled in sugarcane fields to support their families.

Reflecting on her past, Ms. Baswati recounted, “Life was tough. All of my family worked on the farm.” Her husband was employed by the Colonial Sugar Refining (CSR) Company, and together they raised their children through sheer determination and hard work. She reminisced about the days when farming was labor-intensive, stating, “When we used to work on the farm, there were no machines. Everything was done by hand, but we did it because we had no other choice.”

Despite her aging memory, Baswati continues to live independently, taking pride in cooking her meals and exhibiting a quiet strength. “I just do what I can,” she expressed with a smile, highlighting her enduring spirit.

On a day dedicated to celebrating mothers in Fiji, Ms. Baswati’s life serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by women like her during the Girmit era. Charan Jeath Singh, Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, praised her, stating that she represents a generation of mothers who gave everything for their families.

The embrace of her story resonates with other narratives emerging as Fiji gears up for the Girmit Day celebrations. Events scheduled from May 10 to 12 will commemorate the resilience of the Girmitiyas and their descendants, underscoring a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting unity among diverse communities.

This initiative reflects a broader effort within Fiji to honor the struggles of the past while guiding future generations toward a more cohesive and inclusive society. The stories of individuals like Ms. Baswati serve as pillars of hope, embodying the strength and perseverance that continue to inspire the fabric of Fijian culture.
