The Tui Macuata and former president, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, has hailed the Ratu Sukuna Day celebration in Labasa as a resounding success, drawing nearly 10,000 attendees. He extended his gratitude to the Government and particularly commended the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs for bringing this significant event to Vanua Levu.

Ratu Wiliame emphasized that the celebration should hold a permanent place in Fiji’s national calendar, highlighting its importance in discussing the history and structure of iTaukei Affairs. He expressed a firm belief in the necessity of teaching Fijian history from a young age, including crucial narratives such as the arrival of early Fijians and the Nakauvadra origin story—especially in light of concerns that parts of Fiji’s history might be excluded from school curricula.

Reflecting on his retirement and return to village life, Ratu Wiliame mentioned he is enjoying quality time with his family and has committed to preserving and protecting the oceans, underscoring his continued dedication to community and environmental stewardship. “Life is good and I am enjoying every minute of it,” he stated.

This celebration aligns with themes raised in similar events, notably the emphasis placed on educating the youth about their heritage and the significance of strong leadership, as exemplified by historical figures like Ratu Sukuna. Past celebrations, such as those highlighted by various community leaders, have consistently reflected on Sukuna’s pivotal role in promoting welfare, unity, and the importance of cultural appreciation.

The ongoing discussions surrounding Ratu Sukuna Day not only serve to honor historical legacies but also inspire hope and collaboration among the future generations of Fiji. Through commemorative events like these, the Fijian community reaffirms its commitment to growth, education, and the celebration of cultural identity.

Overall, this year’s Ratu Sukuna Day shines brightly as a day of unity, inspiring communities to draw from their rich history and work toward a collective, prosperous future.
