Cathy Wong has been elected as the new president of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) during its Annual General Assembly held recently, marking a significant moment in her career. Wong succeeds outgoing president Makarita Lenoa, who has served for seven years. Alongside Wong, Ajay Ballu, Inoke Niubalavu, and Lucy Erasito have been voted in as vice presidents, reinforcing a strong leadership team committed to advancing sports in Fiji.
Key roles were also filled to enhance governance within the organization. Petero Vatu was elected unopposed as vice president of finance, while Prem Narayan will serve a one-year term as Independent Legal Representative. The Assembly appointed Dr. Robin Mitchell and Vidhya Lakhan as Trustees, both recognized as life members of FASANOC, and Munroe Leys as the Honorary Solicitor, with KPMG serving as the Honorary Auditor. This robust governance framework is expected to ensure effective oversight and management.
Wong’s election is seen as a progressive step towards greater inclusivity in leadership roles within Fijian sports, mirroring a broader commitment to empowering women. Her prior experience as a Board Director for Women’s Rugby at Fiji Rugby Union provides an excellent foundation for her new role. In her acceptance, Wong expressed her plans to strengthen collaborations with national sports federations, aiming to enhance Fiji’s overall performance in sports.
The new leadership team’s synergy is anticipated to lead to significant advancements for Fiji’s sporting initiatives. This promising transition not only highlights the importance of female representation in sports leadership but also emphasizes a collaborative approach that could greatly benefit future athletes in Fiji. The focus now shifts to harnessing this new energy to facilitate growth and success across various sporting domains in the nation.
