Call for Constitutional Change: Bridging Fiji’s Political Divide

Opposition Member of Parliament Viliame Naupoto has expressed concerns that Fiji’s 2013 Constitution fails to foster unity among the nation’s populace. During his statement in Parliament at the end of the week, Naupoto highlighted that the Constitution’s creation process has contributed to its shortcomings.

He noted a significant divide, primarily along political lines, regarding support for the Constitution. This division stems from the perception that the Constitution favors a specific political party. Since the inaugural election held under this Constitution in 2014, it has faced ongoing criticism, both within Parliament and among the public, leading to calls from various individuals and organizations for a review of the document.

Naupoto emphasized the need for amendments, urging fellow Members of Parliament to consider the necessity of returning the Constitution to the public for review and potential amendment. He asserted that this process is not intended to oppose any person or political party but rather to benefit the people, promote nation-building, and strengthen democracy, ultimately helping to refine Fiji’s developing democratic system.
