A new community-focused venture has launched in Kinoya, Suva, with the grand opening of the Cagivou supermarket, following a joint investment by local businessman Vineet Singh and Ratu Tevita Mara Latinara, the Vunivalu of Serua. This $150,000 project aims to make essential goods more accessible to residents while creating job opportunities, particularly for youth. Jerry Tuwai, the Fiji sevens rugby legend, has taken on the role of brand ambassador for the supermarket, further emphasizing its community ties.

Alan Kumar, the supermarket’s manager, highlighted that the establishment is deeply rooted in community engagement, with many of its employees coming from Kinoya and surrounding areas. He mentioned the importance of offering hope to neglected youth, stating, “Cagivou means a new start.” The supermarket seeks to provide not only employment opportunities but also support local agriculture by selling products from the Serua area, thus fostering economic growth and sustainability.

Addressing concerns over the location in a Red Zone, Kumar pointed out that the initiative has already generated employment for more than 15 construction workers and eight permanent staff members, most of whom are from the Kinoya community. Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Ifereimi Vasu, who officiated at the opening, praised the project as a positive step toward increased iTaukei participation in economic activities.

Vasu noted the significance of this venture in combating longstanding economic issues faced by indigenous Fijians, whose representation in business investments has been historically low. The Cagivou supermarket not only aims to supply local products but also to create a comprehensive support system for local entrepreneurs, reflecting a trend towards community-driven economic development.

This initiative resonates with earlier discussions about enhancing the participation of iTaukei peoples in business ventures, and it symbolizes a collective movement toward a more inclusive economic environment in Fiji. With further expansion plans for additional locations in Nadi and Labasa, the Cagivou supermarket inspires hope for a revitalized local economy, prompting optimism for future endeavors in empowering indigenous communities.

The establishment of the Cagivou supermarket is part of a broader movement across Fiji aimed at encouraging local entrepreneurs and uplifting communities, making this an exciting development for Kinoya and its residents.
