Approximately 50 passengers experienced significant inconvenience when their bus found itself in a drainage ditch at Tovata, located near Suva. The incident occurred around 11 am after the driver lost control when the vehicle hit a pothole, sliding into the drain.
A representative from City Transport highlighted the pressing concern about road safety in Tovata, stating that without necessary upgrades, future accidents could result in serious injuries or fatalities. The company has repeatedly raised concerns with the Public Works Department about the poor road conditions, emphasizing that only major incidents seem to prompt action on road improvements.
Passengers were forced to traverse nearly two kilometers to reach the main road at Laqere to continue their journeys into Suva. The spokesperson reiterated their commitment to maintaining bus services but stressed the urgent need for road enhancements to prevent such accidents.
While the situation is indeed troubling, it serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and infrastructure maintenance. Hopefully, this incident will prompt the relevant authorities to prioritize necessary upgrades, ensuring safer travel for all residents in the area.
It’s essential for consistent communication between transport companies and public infrastructure departments to prevent such occurrences in the future.
