A significant dispute between the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association of Fiji (PBWAF) and renowned trainer John Ramos almost prevented him from being in Sakaraia Ve’s corner during his 1977 match against Ali Afakasi. This incident is detailed in Ramos’ upcoming book, “Maker of Champions,” set for release on Saturday.

Afakasi, who hailed from Samoa and was based in New Zealand, was Ve’s second international opponent. At that time, he held a strong reputation in the Commonwealth’s welterweight division and was viewed as an essential stepping stone for Ve towards securing a Commonwealth title, which had been planned a year prior. Already a champion, Afakasi had clinched the South Seas welterweight title in 1974 by defeating Inia Catarogo in the fourth round and also held various other regional titles.

Despite being suspended by PBWAF, Ramos chose to proceed with the fight. Subsequently, Ve sent a letter to the PBWAF, informing them that his chief trainer would not be in his corner, a decision that took PBWAF secretary Mumtaz Ali by surprise. Ali expressed that Ve’s proactive approach was a wise decision, as sticking with Ramos could have jeopardized Ve’s boxing career.

Ve, however, reassured that their partnership was not over, explaining that he had anticipated the PBWAF might have rejected the fight if Ramos was in his corner, prompting him to seek a resolution that would allow him to compete. Ali acknowledged Ramos’ decision and praised PBWAF despite negative public sentiment towards them.

As the fight date approached, Ve expressed a desire for Ramos to be present, which meant Ramos had to set aside his pride and formally apologize to PBWAF through legal channels. Following this, an urgent PBWAF meeting was called, and they decided to lift Ramos’ 12-month suspension, a development met with joy from Ramos and his supporters.

On the fight night, more than 300 of Ve’s family and supporters traveled from Lovoni to the Laucala Bay Hangar to cheer him on. The match showcased a notable age difference, with 30-year-old Afakasi being eight years senior to Ve. The fight concluded dramatically, with Ve claiming victory by TKO in the sixth round after causing a cut over Afakasi’s eye and prompting a significant nosebleed earlier in the match. This victory catalyzed PBWAF to advocate for Ve’s consideration for a title shot with the British Boxing Board of Control.

This story captures not only the challenges and triumphs of an athlete’s career but also emphasizes the importance of resilience and teamwork in overcoming obstacles. It serves as a hopeful reminder of how determination and strategic decisions can lead to significant achievements, paving the way for future opportunities.

In summary, the article recounts the dispute between Ramos and PBWAF, the decision-making process that led to Ve’s fight against Afakasi, and the eventual victory that opened doors for Ve’s boxing aspirations.
