Sanjay Kaba, the former Director of Telecom Fiji Limited, has received approval for a variation of his bail, allowing him to travel internationally for business purposes. Kaba appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele, who granted the request while noting that Kaba’s adherence to previous bail conditions and his strong ties to the country warranted such permission.

Kaba faces serious allegations of obtaining a financial advantage exceeding $766,000 through his company, Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited, during a tender process for project management services related to Telecom Fiji’s new office and data center project. These allegations date back to his tenure as a board member for Telecom Fiji and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings from January 2017 to January 2019.

The court has stipulated conditions for Kaba’s travel, including the need to notify the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) before each trip and to surrender his passport upon return. The magistrate emphasized that any breach of these conditions could lead to the revocation of his bail and potential extradition.

The proceedings underscore the ongoing efforts by FICAC to enhance ethical standards in governance and corporate accountability in Fiji. As Kaba’s case progresses, it presents an opportunity for reinforcing the importance of transparency in both public and corporate leadership.

The next court hearing is scheduled for March 22, where further developments are anticipated. This case serves as a pivotal moment in addressing corruption in Fiji, with hope for upholding accountability and restoring public trust in governance.
