The meaning of “Back to School” has taken on a new and inspiring dimension for some young athletes in Ba, who have returned to their studies after having left school two or three years ago. These players have rejoined their peers at the Ba Rugby Academy, demonstrating a commitment not just to sports but also to their education.
Gaby Kautoga, secretary of the Ba Rugby Union (BRU), emphasized that education is a fundamental aspect of the academy’s mission. “We want to ensure our best young players not only receive specialized coaching that elevates their skills but also complete their schooling with commendable grades,” Kautoga remarked. Among the 30 players selected for the academy last year, eight had previously dropped out of school. Their successful re-enrollment symbolizes a significant step toward personal development and academic achievement.
To support these players, the BRU has partnered with Ba Methodist High School, aiding them with necessary items such as uniforms, books, and sports equipment. Talatala, a coach involved in the program, shared some light-hearted moments, explaining how he had to assist players in adjusting to wearing ties for the first time in years. “It’s encouraging to see their enthusiasm as they understand that excelling in school is essential for their continued participation in the academy,” he noted.
One of the academy players, Isimeli Katonivere, hails from a remote village and expressed his excitement for this new chapter in his life. After helping his father on their farm since leaving Ba Provincial High School in 2023, Katonivere is eager to embrace this opportunity. “This program allows me to finish my schooling, and I’m very grateful,” he stated, reflecting on the support from his family and their celebration of his involvement in the academy.
Talatala Gaby highlighted the importance of this phase in the young athletes’ lives, noting that it is a crucial time when they can easily fall into detrimental habits if not properly guided. He emphasized the need for strong role models, saying, “More than just a sport, rugby has the potential to transform lives when leveraged positively.”
This initiative not only aims to enhance sporting talent but also strives to mold well-rounded individuals who understand the value of education and discipline, fostering a brighter future for these young athletes.
