The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced an extension of its sports diplomacy program aimed at supporting Pacific athletes in their preparation for various prestigious events, including the Paris 2024 and the upcoming LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the 2026 Commonwealth Games. This initiative builds upon Australia’s successful engagement in Pacific sports and aims to enhance regional performance and participation at elite levels.

The extension of this program is significant for athletes as it provides access to high-performance training, elite competition, and travel opportunities necessary for achieving qualifying standards for these major events. AOC CEO Matt Carroll emphasized the importance of planning for athletes, stating that such support is crucial for their growth and success in competitive sports.

“Brisbane 2032 is not just a home Games for Australians; it equally represents a home for our Pacific athletes,” said Carroll, reinforcing the commitment to help these athletes reach their potential. The AOC plans to collaborate with key partners, including PacificAus Sports and Commonwealth Games Australia, to develop a robust support framework for Pacific nations.

AOC President Ian Chesterman pointed out that sport fosters connections and encourages dialogue between nations. The sentiment was echoed by Paralympics Australia President Alison Creagh, who highlighted the value of the relationships shared across Oceania, particularly in the Paralympic movement. Additionally, Commonwealth Games Australia President Ben Houston noted that this robust funding will play a vital role in preparing athletes for competition.

This initiative resonates with Australia’s broader strategy in the Pacific region, emphasizing the importance of sports in cultural exchange and community development. The Australian government’s continued investment in sports highlights a long-standing commitment to fostering talent and enhancing opportunities for aspiring athletes across Pacific nations.

Overall, the extension of the PacificAus Sports program is a positive step forward, fostering not just athletic achievement but also strengthening community ties and promoting inclusivity in sports throughout the region.
