The NZFFI Auckland All Stars demonstrated their prowess by defeating Labasa 3-1 in their final Group B match of the 2024 Flick Hygiene Pacific Community Cup held in Lautoka, securing their place in the semifinals.
Labasa entered the match needing at least a draw to advance, having gathered four points previously, while the Auckland team required a victory to ensure progression. The match saw Auckland’s Andrew Naicker score the opening goal just before halftime, expertly receiving a pass from midfield and skillfully placing it past Labasa’s goalkeeper, Simione Tamanisau.
The second half proved fruitful for the All Stars as Gabriel Matanisiga and Solomon Islands player Andrew Abba added two more goals, solidifying their win. Despite a valiant effort from Labasa, who managed to score through a penalty by Christopher Wasasala late in the match, it was not enough to change the outcome.
With this win, the Auckland All Stars finished second in Group B with a total of six points, trailing only the USA All Stars, who topped the group with seven points.
As the Auckland All Stars prepare for the semifinals, their performance illustrates the team’s strength and determination, setting a hopeful tone for their next challenges in the tournament. This victory not only boosts team morale but also reinforces their status as reigning champions, eager to defend their title.
