The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is on track to complete the review of the Litter Act by April this year, in line with directives from the government. Permanent Secretary for Environment Dr. Sivendra Michael confirmed that this review is aimed at preparing updates for the upcoming parliamentary session.

Dr. Michael emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “We have been asked by our minister that the review of the Litter Act should be completed by April, for the April sitting. We are working with that timeline.” The finalization of this review is critical, as it will address existing gaps within the current legal framework, particularly in terms of regulations surrounding littering.

A significant aspect of the review includes the introduction of new accompanying regulations designed to bolster enforcement. Dr. Michael noted that these regulations will not require parliamentary approval and will be submitted directly to the Cabinet for endorsement once finalized. “We hope the regulations will also be in place,” he said.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance the fight against littering and illegal dumping, as stronger enforcement measures are anticipated to improve compliance nationwide. The proactive steps being taken suggest a commitment to promoting environmental stewardship and fostering a cleaner, healthier community.
