FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A slow-moving trough of low pressure to the west of Fiji, combined with a moist easterly wind flow, is driving cloud and showers southeast across the group. Showers will be frequent and locally heavy in several areas, with a risk of thunderstorms and some isolated heavy falls through to midnight tomorrow.

Occasional showers, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms are expected over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere conditions will be partly cloudy with some showers and isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms and heavy falls. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low‑lying and flood‑prone areas, so caution is advised where heavy rain develops.

Winds are moderate easterlies, fresh at times today, and are expected to become predominantly northeasterly tomorrow. Seas are moderate to rough currently, easing to moderate for most areas by Monday. Mariners should take care in rougher conditions and if planning coastal activities allow for locally higher seas in exposed waters.

Looking ahead to Monday, the trough’s influence eases somewhat but some showers will persist across Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere it will be mainly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers; isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls remain possible in the afternoon and evening. Winds will be moderate from the east to northeast and seas generally moderate.

Selected centre forecasts to midnight tomorrow: Navua/Suva/Nausori — occasional showers, heavy at times with a few thunderstorms, minimum 23°C, maximum 31°C (Monday: some showers, isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms and heavy falls possible, min 23°C, max 31°C). Nadi/Lautoka/Ba — cloudy periods with some showers, afternoon or evening thunderstorms and heavy falls expected, min 23°C, max 32°C (Monday: mainly fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms). Labasa — cloudy periods with some showers and afternoon or evening thunderstorms, min 21°C, max 32°C (Monday: mainly fine with isolated showers or thunderstorms possible). Rotuma remains under a moist easterly flow with a trough nearby: cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms, moderate easterlies and moderate seas, min 23°C, max 31°C (Monday: occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms, min 24°C, max 32°C).
