Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to transform the landscape of healthcare, particularly for general practitioners (GPs), according to independent consultant Danielle Bancroft. Speaking at the “AI-Powered Health Care” conference, Bancroft emphasized that AI is not a disruptive force designed to replace GPs, but rather a supportive tool intended to enhance clinical workflows.

Bancroft noted that GPs have been using AI tools for decades to optimize their administrative tasks, but recent advancements mean that these AI systems are more sophisticated and accessible than ever before. This evolution allows healthcare professionals to save time on paperwork and focus more on patient care.

She stated, “It should reduce the paperwork, surface the right data at the right time, adapt to your style, and support decision-making. It’s not here to replace you; it’s here to support you.” By effectively managing documentation and preparing GPs for follow-up care, AI promises to streamline medical practices and improve patient outcomes.

This perspective mirrors sentiments expressed at a recent conference led by Dr. Dhirendra Lal of the Fiji College of General Practitioners, where the pressing need for ethical guidelines surrounding AI implementation in healthcare was discussed. Both Bancroft and Dr. Lal agree on the importance of maintaining ethical standards as AI becomes integral in medical settings, highlighting the need to manage sensitive patient data and enhance the overall quality of care.

The advent of advanced AI technologies in healthcare signifies a hopeful trajectory, where professionals can reclaim valuable time and resources, ultimately benefiting patient care and fostering a more efficient healthcare system.
