A significant investment of $3.8 million has been made to rehabilitate houses affected by termites in the Western and Central Divisions. According to Sakiasi Tubuna, the co-chair of the Termite Taskforce and Assistant Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, this funding has benefited a total of 775 homes. The funding encompasses 448 applications granted in the previous fiscal year and 327 in the ongoing financial year.
Furthermore, the government is expanding its termite baiting program beyond the regions of Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, Labasa, and Nakasi. Flick Hygiene Pte Ltd has been contracted to implement this initiative, which aims to provide a baiting system for 1,000 households. The primary focus of this baiting system is to eliminate existing termite colonies by strategically placing bait stations in areas prone to infestation.
Sashi Kiran, co-chair of the Taskforce and Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, emphasized the importance of community involvement in this initiative. She urged residents to register their properties to assess the extent of termite activity in different areas. It is important to note that there will be no cash assistance; the focus remains solely on baiting services.
In addition, Flick Hygiene’s executive director Mohammed Zakariah confirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture granted approval for the mass distribution of bait products to hardware stores nationwide. The cost for each bait is anticipated to be around $30 to $40.
This concerted effort reflects the government’s commitment to protecting homes and communities from termite damage. With increased awareness and a systematic approach to eradication, the initiative not only aims to preserve property but also fosters a spirit of cooperation among residents in tackling environmental challenges.
In summary, the government’s investment in termite rehabilitation and baiting programs demonstrates a proactive and structured response to a significant issue, with hopeful outcomes for affected communities.
