Beyond the headline

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole of the Fiji group as a slow-moving trough of low pressure drifts southeast over the islands. The trough, together with a moist easterly wind flow, is bringing widespread cloud, showers and rain that are expected to persist through tomorrow. Residents should expect periods of frequent rain and scattered thunderstorms in many areas before conditions begin to ease.

The most significant rainfall and isolated heavy falls are likely over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the whole of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere across the group, occasional rain is forecast, with a higher chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls. Rain is expected to ease to more scattered showers from tomorrow, though pockets of heavy rain may linger in some districts.

Localised heavy falls could lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, so people in vulnerable locations should take precautions and stay informed via official updates. Winds will be moderate easterlies and fresh at times, and seas are forecast to be moderate to rough. Mariners and those planning coastal activities should exercise caution.

The outlook for Saturday shows a reduction in widespread rain but persistent showers for several areas: Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu-Naitasiri, Ra-Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere conditions are expected to be mainly fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds are expected to be moderate to fresh easterlies, gusty at times, with seas remaining moderate to rough.

Location notes: Navua, Suva and Nausori should expect occasional rain with afternoon or evening thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls, easing to occasional showers from tomorrow (overnight lows around 23°C and daytime highs near 30°C, rising to about 31°C on Saturday). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba will see showers become frequent and increase to rain today, easing to scattered showers from tomorrow (min 23°C, max 32°C). Labasa is forecast to have showers becoming frequent and turning to rain later today, then mostly fine apart from evening showers from tomorrow (min 21°C, max 32°C). Yasawa and Mamanuca will have occasional rain and possible heavy afternoon or evening showers today, then generally fine with some showers from tomorrow (min 23°C, max 31°C). Rotuma remains under a moist easterly flow with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms and moderate seas (min 23°C, max 31°C, rising slightly on Saturday).
