Featherweight boxer Runqi Zhou from Sydney has officially confirmed that he will not be fighting Fiji’s new lightweight champion, Mikaele Ravalaca, in May. Zhou’s manager, Tony Tolj, stated that their team has repeatedly declined the proposed bout since receiving the initial offer in January.

Tolj raised concerns regarding the weight class for the fight, noting that Ravalaca will be fighting at 59 kilograms while Zhou competes in the featherweight division at 57 kilograms. Additionally, Zhou’s trainer, Angelo Hyder, highlighted that the financial terms offered for the match were insufficient, further influencing their decision not to proceed.

In May, Zhou is set to participate in a World Boxing Council (WBC) sanctioned Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia, intensifying the logistical challenges regarding any fight with Ravalaca in Suva. Tolj stressed their unwavering commitment to Zhou’s participation in the Grand Prix, clarifying once again that no formal agreement has been reached for the matchup in Fiji.

This situation contrasts with the previous excitement stirred by Samir Khan, the promoter for Bluewater Boxing Promotions, who was enthusiastic about having Zhou defend his title against Ravalaca. Ravalaca, having recently achieved a knockout victory over Mohammed Ali, expressed eagerness for the opportunity to fight Zhou.

The boxing scene in Fiji continues to gain traction, with Ravalaca’s rising profile further bolstering local interest in the sport. While Zhou’s withdrawal from this anticipated matchup raises concerns about future enticing bouts in the Fijian boxing landscape, it emphasizes the need for careful planning and negotiations to create compelling matchups that can showcase local talent on larger platforms.

In a hopeful note, the ongoing developments in Fijian boxing indicate a promising future for the sport, with rising stars looking to make their mark on the international stage. Promoters and fans alike remain keen on witnessing exciting events that highlight the region’s boxing potential.
