In a recent initiative led by Ereqe Batibasaga, the youth of the Wairuku Youth Club in Navola, Nadroga, are embracing agriculture as a crucial element of their livelihood. Batibasaga emphasized the importance of utilizing local land effectively, urging young people to consider farming as a sustainable source of income and personal development.

Since its inception last year, the youth group has actively engaged in various agricultural activities, with many members prioritizing education and employment while also participating in community farming initiatives. Batibasaga noted that the success of these young people stems from diligent cultivation practices that have yielded a diverse range of crops over the past three years.

The youth club, consisting of 20 members, sees agriculture as foundational to their future. They are increasingly utilizing their cultivated land for crops such as taro, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and a variety of leafy greens. Batibasaga believes that if they adopt a diligent work ethic, they can maximize their land’s potential to support their community’s needs and improve their financial stability.

Additionally, the group is exploring innovative practices such as Organic Liquid Compost, which they have incorporated into their growing projects. This method not only enriches the soil but also promises an increase in crop yields and sustainability.

Moreover, community collaboration remains pivotal, with ongoing support from the local government’s agricultural programs. The youth have been urged to foster a stronger connection to the land as a source of their culture and identity, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable practices that will benefit future generations.

In a similar vein, past initiatives have highlighted the vital role of traditional agriculture in fostering economic viability in various Fijian communities. By drawing on these successful models, the Wairuku Youth Club can enhance its practices while encouraging others to engage with sustainable farming methods.

This collective effort among the youth provides not only an avenue for economic empowerment but also reinforces their connection to their heritage, demonstrating that the future of agriculture can thrive alongside modern adaptations.
