When Gillian Kumar received her diabetes diagnosis, an immediate sense of fear enveloped her. Already managing other health conditions, the news felt like an additional burden in her young life. The uncertainty of the future weighed heavily on both her and her parents, who worried about how this new challenge would influence her path ahead.

However, instead of succumbing to fear, Kumar made a resolute choice: diabetes would not define her or dictate her life. She was determined to seize control of her circumstances. By actively following medical advice, modifying her diet, and adopting healthier habits, Kumar gradually found her balance. Today, she views diabetes not as a source of fear but as a manageable component of her life, emphasizing that it is she who holds the reins, not the condition itself.

“You cannot always worry about ‘I have this,’” she emphasizes. “Don’t let that stop you from what you’re doing. Always try to move forward.”

Kumar’s journey reflects the challenges many young individuals face while living with diabetes, particularly within the school environment. She attributes much of her resilience to the unwavering support of friends, who stood by her side during the hardest moments. Despite these hurdles, the 21-year-old refuses to view her diagnosis as a limitation; rather, she sees it as a wake-up call, teaching her to treat her body with intentionality and self-discipline.

According to Kumar, negative thoughts and constant overthinking can be particularly harmful, especially for those newly diagnosed. Her empowering message to others navigating similar paths is clear: do not allow diabetes to dominate your thoughts or hold you back.

Kumar’s experience serves as a poignant reminder that though managing diabetes is undoubtedly challenging, it doesn’t mean that dreams or aspirations come to an end. With the right mindset, support system, and determination, life can progress forward with strength, purpose, and a renewed sense of hope, despite any diagnosis.
