Young voices in Fiji are increasingly breaking the silence on the detrimental impact of drugs within their communities. As drug use continues to escalate, these youths are calling for enhanced community support, improved educational initiatives, and effective rehabilitation measures.
Eighteen-year-old Nishal Narayan from Baulevu plays a pivotal role in this movement. Having served as the Minister for Agriculture during last year’s Youth Parliament, Narayan is a strong proponent of the belief that young people hold more power than they may realize in addressing drug-related issues. As a youth leader and entrepreneur, he emphasizes that initiating conversations surrounding drugs is a fundamental step in confronting this serious challenge.
Seeing the rapid effects of drug use on young people, Narayan has reached out to peers across the nation to gather their perspectives on the crisis. He reports that these discussions reflect a unanimous call for stricter border checks and accountability with respect to drug trafficking. According to Narayan, “True accountability on drugs means everyone plays a role – when a community stands together and takes responsibility, drugs can be reduced and lives can be protected.”
He advocates for a proactive approach to reducing drug use among youths, urging them to support one another and take collective action. Recognizing the urgent threat that rising drug issues pose to both young people and the future of Fiji, he warns that while the problem cannot be solved overnight, inaction could jeopardize the nation’s future.
Narayan underscores the importance of fostering a drug-free environment, stating, “Let’s stand strong together to protect our nation’s future because a strong Fiji starts with drug-free youths.” He encourages young people to promote positive choices and to confront harmful behaviors openly, noting that fear often keeps youths from feeling safe in their communities.
With many young voters poised to participate in upcoming elections, he stresses the need for them to advocate for change regarding drug policies. Narayan remains hopeful that the youth of Fiji will persist in their discussions and engage in initiatives aimed at preventing drug use, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to safeguarding their futures.
