Two weeks into the Fiji Sports Council Athletics camp, the emphasis remains on cultivating the next generation of sports talent. Despite the recent holiday celebrations and the approach of the new year in 2025, young athletes have shown remarkable dedication to honing their skills.

Located at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, the camp will run until January 21, aiming to develop disciplined, skilled, and mentally tough competitors. National athletics coach Pio Qerewaqa praised the unwavering commitment exhibited by these youngsters, emphasizing that their focus amid holiday distractions is a testament to their determination to excel.

“These kids are displaying incredible focus,” Qerewaqa remarked. “Even with all the festive distractions, they arrive every day, ready to learn and improve.”

In addition to refining athletic techniques and building mental resilience, Qerewaqa underscored the vital role parents play in their children’s sporting journeys. He noted that parental involvement extends beyond merely transporting their kids to practices; active engagement is crucial for fostering development.

“Parents significantly influence an athlete’s success,” he asserted. “When they participate and show encouragement, it enhances their children’s confidence and motivation.”

The program also includes sessions tailored for parents and coaches, which cover essential topics like nutrition, recovery, and providing emotional support to young athletes. Qerewaqa emphasized the importance of parental commitment as the camp continues, urging families to stay engaged.

“Efforts from these young athletes need to be reciprocated with equal commitment at home,” he stated.

As the year wraps up, the camp stands as a powerful reminder that focus and encouragement are essential elements in the pursuit of excellence, both competitively and personally.

This camp symbolizes a promising pathway for the participating athletes, illustrating how dedication, support, and a commitment to improvement can pave the way for future success in sports and beyond.
