The Ministry of Education has announced positive developments in literacy rates among Year 5 and Year 7 students, as provisional results from the 2025 Literacy and Numeracy Assessment were released today.
Significantly, Year 5 literacy proficiency has experienced a notable increase of 5 percentage points, rising from 90% in the previous year to 95% in 2025. Similarly, Year 7 literacy results have improved by 2 percentage points, climbing from 93% to 95%.
On the other hand, the numeracy results reflect a more varied landscape. Year 5 numeracy has remained steady at 74%, while Year 7 has faced a slight decline, dropping from 83% to 81%. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro praised the remarkable gains in literacy but emphasized the urgent need to address the decrease in Year 7 numeracy performance.
Minister Radrodro also expressed his concerns regarding the number of registered students who did not participate in the exams. For Year 5, out of more than 18,000 registered students, only 17,940 completed the literacy assessment. Year 7 saw a similar trend, with 18,744 students sitting for the literacy exam. Schools have been given a timeframe of 30 days to verify and resolve any registration issues before the results are finalized.
The Ministry has made the provisional results and detailed reports available through the FEMIS system for schools today, while parents can collect their children’s performance reports directly from their respective schools. This marks a pivotal moment in the education sector, highlighting both achievements and areas needing improvement, while offering a hopeful outlook for future assessments.
